I even had two match points to win the game and lost. However, a devastating foot injury that occurred the night before, substantially limited my ability to be the agile Becker that we all know and love, the type of Becker that usually defeats the American resistance. After a grueling 7-5 loss, I shall seek revenge tonight on the Wimbledon Centre Court grass. And whilst the foot is not 100% healed, no amount of pain will allow me to lose to this pompous jerk of a man named McEnroe! Victory...will be mine!

Students, sorry for another delayed absence. There is just not too much happening on a daily basis in sports to fill a blog. But fear not, I have plenty going on outside of the sports.

But first, the sports.

Will Barton is not going to be eligible to play for the Tigers this year. Cool. The 4th best player in the country not playing. In a way it may be a blessing in disguise. That's one less badass to have to score points, it might open the door for another guy to step up. Too bad it is our best badass scorer...So I imagine we would have been a top 10 preseason team. I think we'll still be Top 25. Right? I have no clue.
Brett Favre retired, then didn't. He said he'll play if the ankle is good to go. I hope he plays, I like him and I'd like to see him give it one more go.
Darelle Revis is looking like he'll hold out for the season if necessary. That's stupid. Just play, the money will be there. How can he waste a prime year of his career? The Jets are stacked (even if he doesn't play). Get out there, Revis!
Tyson Gay beat Usain Bolt in the 100m the other day. I guess that's an upset. Gay sprinting...get it? Gay? Ha.
Shaq was introduced this morning for the Celtics. He said he has 2-3 more years. Umm, hate to break it to you Big Shaq, but...no you don't. No one on that team (minus Rondo) has 2-3 more years. KG, Ray Ray, PP, JO, Shaq...well Pierce probably has some old man minutes in him in a couple years. Either way, Boston might be looking like a retirement home by midseason.
T-Mac signed with the Pistons for 1 year. He is 31 years old. Kobe is the same age and still unstoppable. Imagine if T-Mac still had knees...or what could have been. Vince Carter made it a little longer than T-Mac before his knees gave out. If Vince and T-Mac could've stayed healthy until 32-33 years old...woo. They would have put up giant point totals. Probably top 20 all-time totals.

Trippin:

For the wife's big 3-0 we went to New York City. Neither of us had ever been. I will say, it was the best trip I've ever been on, everything we did was awesome. The people were friendly and helpful, the hotel was great, our flights were on time. Couldn't have been better. We checked out a lot of cool stuff:

Top of the Rock - which is a great view from the top of the Rockefeller building (where NBC is). We went at night and the view was spectacular.
We did the double decker bus tour. Saw all of Manhattan and Brooklyn and got a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty. It was very informative and they took us to some cool spots for skyline pictures.
Went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I'm not real into art stuff, but it's kinda hard not to be impressed when you see Van Gogh, Picasso, Dali etc
Saw an off Broadway play called Avenue Q. It's people with puppets singing funny crude songs. Sounds lame, but it was really funny...and you could drink in the theater.
Went to Chinatown and Little Italy, got some fake Rolex watches and the wife got some fancy handbags.
And we just shopped all down 5th Ave. Niketown was 5 stories. The NBA Store was freakin' sweet. I wanted to buy everything in there. I think they maybe had 5 Grizzlies items in the whole 3 story place...shocker.

One thing we did was go to the Bronx and visit the new Yankee Stadium as the Yankees played the Red Sox. A-Rod got hurt in BP and didn't play, but I saw CC Sabathia go 8 innings and Mariano Rivera come in and close out the 9th.

I realize I have stated on this blog that the Yankees are my most hated team in all of sport.

Confession: During the visit to Yankee Stadium...I caught Yankee fever. I don't know man..I don't know why. I'm so conflicted right now. I can't hate a team that put on an amazing experience for me and the wife (who also loved the game and stadium). I even bought a Sabathia shersey, a shirt for the wife, a beer cousy (sp?)...it was ridiculous.

R.I.P Lorenzen Wright

Worst fears were confirmed the other day as they found the body of Memphis Baller Lorenzen Wright shot multiple times.

I don't want to dwell on this for the whole post. It just seems like the longer the murder goes unsolved we might find out some things about our hometown legend that might shine a light on his personal life that no one ever knew about. Things that may help the case, but bury his legacy.

It's been a bad couple days for former Memphis Tiger basketball players.

Memphis OG Lorenzen Wright has been missing for a week reports his family. In some ways this does not surprise me at all. Just look at the track record of Memphis players, from Memphis. Ren, Burks, Hunt..and that's just recently. They can't escape their own environment. Sad. And there have been reports of Ren's crazy spending habits. He's recently lost 2 multi-million dollar homes. Not to mention the death of an infant daughter. The guy has definitely been through some stuff.

I never thought to myself that Lorenzen would be the old Tiger hanging out at games and getting involved in the program, rallying the fans, being a supporter. He just didn't seem like the type.

And he may have had another couple years as a big man on the bench somewhere. Shit, Kurt Thomas and Theo Ratliff are getting jobs.

I'm going to stop here, this is becoming an obituary...so here's to hoping for the best, but preparing for the worse.

Now on to some dumb shit...

Another Memphian, former Tiger and NBA player Shawne Williams was arrested with another former Tiger Kareem Cooper the other day. Driving on suspended license, weed in the car...sound familiar?

Williams had his share of "problems" when he finally got to U of M, but he had a freaking awesome year. (5 threes in the first half against Duke in The Garden in his first game anyone?). After he got drafted? Back to the old ways. Burned bridges in Indiana and Dallas. Waste of talent.

And why is Kareem Cooper in Memphis? You may remember him getting arrested during his time here for...oh, what was it?....weed! Maybe he needed to re-up?

Chris Paul now said he wants a trade. He wants to pull a LeBron and form his own Big 3. Sources tell ESPN sources that he wants to go to NY Knicks. But he also lists Orlando, Dallas and Portland as "wish list" of teams.

Bet you won't see Melo signing that extension with Denver if CP3 gets traded to NY. Amare, Melo and Paul vs Bron, Wade and Bosh? That would be insane.

Dream I had last night

Me and Horace were in Dallas at American Airlines Arena to "witness" LBJ's first Heat game. (I'm pretty sure the NBA hasn't released the schedule for next year, but if the Heat's first game is in Dallas? You can call me Prophet Johnson). Anyway we were right where the players come out. And in this dream, the Heat were introduced last. LeBron was hanging out right next to us. We high-fived and he gave us both a nod of acknowledgment. Then he sat down and started talking to us. Hoarace asked him if he was going to average 30 points and 20 rebounds. He laughed and said "Nah, but I'm going to get 20 and 15 assists tonight." I told him he has to average at least 15 dimes a game with the team he's on. He then started talking about how the media made it seem like he didn't like Shaq. I told him, "I love Shaq, he's hilarious." Bron Bron responded, "Me too!" And then I told him Dirk was one of my favorite players and he said, "Dirk's cold." Then I woke up.

Anyway, my dream about LeBron made me hate him a little less. Too bad he's probably not like that in real life.

First off, I have no dog in the LeBron fight. I could care less where he went, although as an NBA fan, I wanted him out of Cleveland. Why? Cause it's fucking Cleveland! What NBA fan would want the game's most exciting player to play for Cleveland?

So the King chooses Miami and drops a big Cleveland Steamer on the state of Ohio.

Fuck Dan Gilbert. He addressed an open letter to Cavs fans right after James announced his decision. He basically trashed him and called him a coward for leaving and said he quit during the playoffs. Ok, guy, he was there for 7 years and you never put the talent around him to win. I'm sure you bent over backwards to make sure he was comfortable and his family and friends were taken care of, but shut up.

What player is going to read that and want to play for Dan Gilbert? What a baby.

And to the people burning his jersey, I understand you're pissed, but really?

It's kinda like the Cal decision here. I look at it like the best 9 years of Tiger basketball (in my lifetime). Yeah, it sucks he left, and everyone was real pissed off, but now...I'm over it. Cavs fans should look at it like they were really lucky to have LeBron for 7 years. Yeah, he didn't win any rings, but who could when the second best player is 33 year old Antawn Jamison?

Yes, LBJ was douche to the max for giving a 1 hour ESPN special to announce the destruction of the Cavs, but get over it. It's not 1995. The Cavs aren't just going to leave town (I don't think) like the Browns.

And hey, Mike Miller is joining the Heat too. That's kinda cool. Didn't realize Mighty Mike was tight with LBJ. So the Heat have 5 players assuming Miller signs. LBJ, Bosh, Wade, Miller and Chalmers.

The Heat traded the number 2 pick in the 08 Draft, Michael Beasley, to the Wolves for a second round pick. Damn! Wolves stealing talent. Nice play for them.

LeBron is having a TV special Thursday to tell people what he's doing. If he does all this shit and announces he's staying in Cleveland that will be the most disappointing moment in NBA history. Leave Cleveland!

Why would you stay in Cleveland? Unless there is some unannounced trade to get Chris Paul, then LBJ will be suiting up next year with the same underachievers he played with this past year. Or maybe King James is the underachiever...hmmm.

So...Bulls, Knicks or Nets? Or Clippers? Ha, if he signs with the Clips that might be the most disappointing thing ever, haha...the Clippers.

I'm not sure the Amare signing is going to help the Knicks land James. They'd be good no doubt, but not as good as Miami or Orlando or if the Bulls get Boozer or Lee they would be better too. And with Amare's injury history, you may only get two or three "max" years out of him.

If he goes to the Nets, that seems like a more long term investment. They got Lopez and Harris, but if Favors develops fast you never know. Or maybe they lockup Boozer/Lee and then get LeBron.

This shit is annoying, just decide already.

Video Games

True Story (short version): I stole a Super Nintendo and all the games from this girl I used to see after she did me wrong.

So I've got a SNES (yeah I call it that cause I'm a former gamer, what). The games I inherited were, unfortunately, crap. Except for Super Mario All Stars which has all three original Super Mario games and Mario World (the shit with Yoshi). So it got old after I beat SM3 in like 2 hours one day. Anyway, kicking with the leader of the Asian Nation-Memphis Chapter, my homeboy Alfred, we were tossing darts at his house and I found a box of SNES games. Good games too. I'm talking Mortal Kombat, NHL 95, Tecmo Super Bowl and NBA Jam Tournament Edition and some other stuff I can't remember. So he hooked me up. Tell you what, I suck at these games. I love playing, but I'm struggling against the CPU on easy mode. Sad day. I used to dominate the sports games of SNES and Sega, now, I'm washed up 26 year old slow fingered, slow reacting, hand-eye coordination challenged loser. Ha, maybe cause when I was 12 playing I didn't drink while doing it...hmm.

And there is a new NBA Jam coming out for the new season.

The Grizzlies are going to keep Rudy Gay!

5 years and $81.6 mil. Before the season we offered 5 years and $50 mil. So he squeezed $30+ mil out of Heisley! He accepted our offer before even visiting Minnesota. He canceled his trip to sign with us. Hopefully, that means he wants to play for Memphis, which is huge.

What I don't like is that it looks like we're going to be letting Ronnie Brewer walk. I understand you signed Rudy to big money, but Brewer wouldn't even be that expensive! He's what we need! Bench scoring, tough wing defender. I would move Sam Young and DeMarre Carroll today to clear playing time and cap space for Brewer.

I know I said the other day I thought LeBron was going to the Bulls, but I'm getting nervous. I think more and more that the Nets might come in a swoop up some guys. The whole Jay-Z connection just makes too much sense. There saying Jay-Z is pitching LeBron on his clothing line and probably telling him he'll be the face of Rocafella and make millions endorsing the line. So then it goes back to how much his "global icon" status he really cares about and how much he cares about winning. How much does LeBron ride Jay's dick?

If James signs with the Nets, with one main reason being Jay-Z, then you could say that Jay-Z, a rapper, was the driving influence of one the biggest financial deals ever! I mean, I gotta think that the money that LeBron makes for NY has to be the biggest impact financially as far as one person moving from one city to another. Has to be. That's some serious influence for a "hip hop mogul." And not only that, Jay-Z would be making millions off LeBron! That might be the biggest hustle that Jay ever does.

Then again maybe, Lebron looks at Jay-Z and says, "You don't know shit about basketball, I'm going to Miami."

I would give anything to be a fly on the wall in those presentations these teams are giving James, Wade, Bosh. They're probably offering the moon to these guys.

Joe Johnson got offered the max and he hasn't responded to the Hawks. He's probably waiting to see what everybody else is going to do. But you gotta think that if he signs the max with the Hawks, that's $30 mil more than any other team could offer. So does he care about winning or money? I'd like to think that these guys care about wining, but $30 mil is a lot of fucking money. You got a chance to get that, you gotta take it. Take the money, Joe. Take the money. Go back to ATL and be the 22 points and clutch shooting guard you are. You're a really good number 2 on a team, so if somebody is giving you franchise money, you take it. Free agency starts Thursday morning! I'd like to give you my predictions/thoughts about who goes where.

Disclaimer: Despite all my knowledgeable sources, who are well connected in the NBA circles, these predictions are completely my own observations.

Dwayne Wade will stay in Miami - he knows somebody (or bodies) will come to South Beach.

Chris Bosh will play with LeBron James next year in either Chicago or Miami. Why the hell wouldn't they?

So I'm thinking Bosh and James go to Chicago. Better supporting cast than Miami.

Wade will stay in Miami and they will add Carlos Boozer or Amare. Although I think Boozer is way more likely to resign with Jazz than Stoudemire with the Suns.

The Knicks will wind up resigning David Lee and then signing Joe Johnson or Rudy Gay to a ridiculous contract.

I have a gut feeling that the Nets are going to get screwed. If they don't get LeBron, no one else is going there.

Last night I was kicking it with Killer Kostakis, aka Manny K, and we watched Observe and Report. I had no idea it was rated R. It is funny and worth watching. Sorry I can't give a better review, I was sorta drinky drank last night. Go watch the movie!

So I kinda trashed Eminem's Recovery CD a couple weeks ago after I heard a few leaked tracks. Well, after seeing all the good reviews I bought it on iTunes (my first iTunes purchase! Yay!). And I must say, this is the best shit he's put out in a while, and I liked Relapse. And yes, I still think he tries to sing too much, but the good tracks on this CD are great tracks.

This might be my new favorite Em track ever. It's that good.

Shout out to the random Grizz fan in NY last night. I feel the same way buddy. What the hell are we doing...

I'm alright with Henry at 12. I guess I'm ok with selling Dominique Jones to the Mavs, and I'm not super excited about Vazquez.

So we reinforced our bench. Great.

Everything this morning about Vazquez is how damn slow he is and how he won't be able to defend in the NBA. Hmm, seems like we should have known this. It was cool that he was excited to get picked by us, but I'm not too thrilled. Hope he proves me wrong , but I think he's Marko Jaric without the hot wife.

So we got our bench shooter in Henry. Can he do anything else? Hopefully he'll push OJ to get better.

And why do we sell Jones to the Mavs? A team in our division who said they were trying to get into the top 20 to pick him. It only makes sense if they use that money to help keep Rudy.

Why didn't we get a second round pick and take a chance with Lance Stephenson, who fell to 40?

Elliot Williams got picked by the Blazers at 22.

Minny taking Wesley Johnson hopefully taking them out of the Rudy Gay situation. Hey, even one less team after him helps us.

I like the Kings draft. They got Cousins and Whiteside. Cousins and Tyreke could be solid for the next 10 years together. And if Whiteside develops, that's just bonus.

And really, there was not much excitement at all last night. No major trades for anybody (other than Bulls clearing space by trading Hinrich). Thought the draft would be the first bit of offseason wheeling and dealing for the NBA, but it now looks like we'll have to wait until July 1st.

Rasheed Wallace did retire last night. Nice run Sheed. One of my favorite guys in the league, if only cause he says things like "CTC" and wore a WWE belt when the Pistons won the Finals.

I love draft night with all the trades and possible trades and trades that fall through. Entertaining long into the night. I remember falling asleep before the end of the 08 draft and Horace banging on my door at like 1am screaming, "We got OJ!" That was much better than going to bed thinking we had Kevin Love. This year's draft should be trade heavy with half the league dropping salary hoping to sign the King, D-Wade, Bosh etc.

Speaking of Bosh, he cut his dreads, so no more Avatar/Predator jokes. I bet his comment will be, "Cut my hair, it's like a new beginning, new team, new look." I guarantee it! Bet any amount of money he says "new beginning" when he talks about it.

Memphis Beat

Well, tonight the rest of the country will laugh at how stupid and southern that Memphis is. And for no good reason really. Jason Lee stars in the shit show. I honestly can't even make myself read about it. There is a huge article on ca.com about it and Lee was on Live at 9 yesterday morning giving the cliche responses to his "love" of Memphis ("I mean, it's everything...the food, the music"). Besides being a cop, his character is also an Elvis impersonator. I have lived in Memphis for 26 years and you know how many Elvis impersonators I've come across that were actually Memphians? Zero. And not everybody has a thick ass southern accent as depicted by the previews. Oh, and the show was filmed in New Orleans. Also stars DJ Qualls, the skinny white guy in Hustle and Flow and Road Trip. Seriously? He's a fucking novelty actor. No one takes him seriously!

So sit back and cringe as you watch tonight and maybe turn it into a drinking game. Like every time somebody pronounces "Memphis" as "Meamphis" you take a shot. Or every mention of the blues or rock and roll you take a shot. Every time Jason Lee says "Ma'am"

Draft is rapidly approaching and the Grizz have been quiet. Other than a report that we offered OJ in a deal for Chris Paul, which was refuted by Heisley. How about a sign and trade with Rudy or OJ for Paul? Can CP3 and OJ play in the same backcourt? Paul is a beast on defense, but then OJ gets stuck with the big 2 guards. CP3 a Grizz? Wishful thinking. Gotta stop.

Everybody keeps saying what a deep draft this is. If that's the case then why the hell don't I know more of these guys? And why are we (supposedly) shopping picks? Use them! Unless you can get Chris Paul...

I always have gotten excited for drafts, even before the Grizzlies got here. This year, I just have a gut feeling we're going to see the Grizzlies do something really stupid. I don't want to trade up in the draft unless we got a top 4 pick. I don't want to pick Patrick Patterson at 12 either. Let's get a player! We are in a good spot this offseason. We can swing a sign and trade for Rudy, we can package picks to move up or get a player. We have the money to sign free agents...though that's not very likely. Make something happen!

How to Make it in America has been renewed by HBO for a second season! Nice. No clue when the new season starts. Hopefully Kid Cudi will still be in it after his liquid cocaine arrest a couple weeks ago, ha.

Started watching Leverage on the Netflix with the wife. Pretty good show, entertaining for sure. It's a band of high end criminals who all have the special skills (i.e. computers, fighting etc). Though they don't use their talent to rob, they use their talent to get leverage for people who hire them to basically fuck over someone or business that fucked them over. It is exactly like the A-Team, just way more high tech. And just like the A-Team, every episode wraps up neatly in 44 minutes. Not my favorite show ever, but its fun to watch.

Being reported that we're close to joining the Big East. Holy balls, that good news! Rivalry renewed with Louisville and Cincy! Play Pitt, WVU, Georgetown, UCONN, Syracuse! Woo!

Don't want to get too excited until it's confirmed, but this could be the best thing to ever happen for the school, other than me graduating of course.

How pissed will Tommy West be if we get in the year after he gets fired? Damn, feel bad for that guy, if he had BCS money to recruit with and could have played that schedule, he would not have been fired. But, since Larry Porter is the recruiting guru, this could turn out very well. Fingers crossed.

NBA Finals

Game 7 tonight! Can't beat game 7 between Celtics and Lakers. Again, would love to see the C's win, but I won't be mad if the Lake Show takes it. Just want to see an all out battle. No Perkins for the C's so we should see a healthy dose of SHEEEEEED three pointers and possibly a technical foul. I rooting for a Sheed vintage 20 and 10 game with him hitting a late three over Pau to clinch.

Draft

Just looked at the calender and the draft is a week from tomorrow. Kinda snuck up me there.

Jordan Crawford and Greivis Vazquez apparently had good workouts with the Grizz yesterday. Is it just me or is Crawford basically OJ Mayo? Both 6'4 scorers with questionable ball handling skills and defense? Sounds a little too familiar. As for Vazquez, fuck that. That guy talked shit about the Tigers and then we went out and beat the shit out of Maryland (Calipari's last win as coach. I was there!). So I'm not too excited about either of those dudes. And what's up with Gordon Hayward basically telling the Grizzlies he doesn't want to play here? Screw that guy.

Finals:

I honestly did not watch 5 minutes of the game last night. I got out of the movie and it was Lakers up 20 right before the half. Went to the bar and periodically checked the score whenever I could and it was never closer than 17 when I saw it. Glad I didn't waste my time. Game 7 is tomorrow night. I will watch that one.

Never knew that so many people I knew love soccer until the World Cup started. Now, everybody is a FIFA expert and knows all the best players and teams. Newsflash turds: Just cause you read the SI preview issue and listen to Alexi Lalas on ESPN does not make you any more knowledgeable than the next guy who doesn't play attention to soccer except every four years. Surprisingly this whole Memphis to BCS via FedEx story is getting a decent amount of coverage nationally. Who cares if it's "wrong"? Not me. If it takes FedEx cash to get us into a BCS conference, then by all means, do it. Can you imagine being in a BCS conference with that revenue sharing? That would immediately boost the football program and we would have money for all the sports at the U of M. It would put our school on another level. Maybe then we wouldn't have to raise tuition every year.

Tonight I'm going to the premiere of Daylight Fades. A local movie by my buddies in Old School Pictures. I've been a part of most of their movies and they have won several film festivals. This is suppose to be their big breakthrough though.

Re: Oil Spill

First of all, the oil spill has had zero impact on me, so my opinions probably shouldn't count, but this is my class and speak on anything I want to.

1) Don't boycott BP you idiots. That's not hurting BP, it's hurting the locals who own the BP stations that in some cases don't even carry BP gas! So chill out.

2) Obama. I keep hearing that people are mad he's not doing more. What the fuck is he going to do short of scooping oil off the beaches? Is he going to dive down to the spill and put a piece of gum in the hole and fix everything? No. It pisses me off that people think he doesn't care. Do people forget we're still in a recession? Oh yeah and what's that thing we're doing in Iraq? Oh yeah, a fucking war is going on! Maybe he's got a few other things going on.

3) The birds. My cousin is a Federal Wildlife Marshall who knows anything and everything about wildlife. He told me on Saturday that those birds already covered in oil have about a 1 in 100 chance of surviving after they've been "cleaned up." And how many fools do we have down there on an assembly line cleaning table washing all those birds? Wasting time and labor.

What's up, Bloggos? Took a little break, had to get my work shit under control, but now that it is, hopefully I'll be posting regularly again. I've missed a lot since the last post, which was the NBA playoff preview...and the playoffs are still going! So, no need to backtrack, let's kick it with current news.

NBA Finals

Lakers leading 2-1 as we head into tonight's game 4 in Boston. KG finally shows up last game and Ray Ray goes 0 fer. Pierce really needs to step up, especially with that extension he'll be trying to get this summer. Either way, looking like the last chance for the aging C's to add to their legacy is slipping away. Would love to see the Celtics win tonight and would love to see this go 7, but Kobe might go for 50 tonight and break the spirit of the Celtics. I'm kinda just ready to get all the free agent signings and draft going.

NBA

So the Cavs want Tom Izzo. Not real sure if that helps keep LeBron. They need Jerry West as GM and a great pro coach (PJax, Larry Brown, Lionel Hollins etc) on the floor to keep him. For realsies though, unless they can bring in Amare or Bosh in a sign and trade, The King needs to expand his kingdom (I had to do that). And the Cavs just have ugly fucking jerseys. I like their supposed fallback if Izzo opts out, which is Byron Scott. I for one was kinda pissed the Grizzlies didn't at least call him (maybe they did privately, but doubtful). He's got the Showtime cred and the coaching cred with two Finals appearances. I still wouldn't be surprised to hear Calipari's name come up again if Izzo doesn't take the job. Then you'll see his mentor Larry Brown get the GM job. Alright, I'm stopping, there are way too many scenarios to play out.

Grizzlies:

In a drunken rant on the Grizz I ran this little scenario past some friends. They didn't agree. Here it goes: Resign Rudy this summer for whatever it cost short of a max contract. Only extend Z-Bo if he comes of his Pau-like asking price. Play out the year, hope our draft picks work out. Next summer if OJ has not made a drastic improvement from last year, we ship his ass out. He's 18 points 4 rebounds and 3 assists per game. Those are not franchise player stats. He needs to be 20, 5 and 5...at least. He has to be better with the ball. Very excited that he's getting reps as point on the summer league team. I just feel that if you've got to keep either Rudy or OJ for the future, you've got to take Rudy, unless OJ makes dramatic improvements next year. We can not have an undersized 2 guard averaging 18, 3 and 3 be our leader.

I know I've almost completely flip flopped from what I used to say about those two, and I would love to keep them both for the next 10 years, but as they always say "basketball is a business" and you just can't afford to keep both with Z-Bo and you're going to have to resign Marc Gasol as well. Last I checked, Heisley wasn't pulling a Mark Cuban and just buying talent.

Bottom line: OJ needs to get better. Again, this is a situation where the Knicks or Nets might come through and throw a near max deal at Rudy and bust up my whole plan. Or we might resign Rudy then OJ gets better and we might be forced to do something else. I fucking miss the Grizzlies season...good or bad it's always something to talk about.

Oh, one more thing. Mike Conley still sucks.

Season finally comes to an end in disappointing fashion as we lose on ESPN to the Thunder. Now onto more important issues: signing Rudy, signing Ronnie and extending Z-Bo. And maybe drafting somebody worth a shit. We have some late first round picks this year, so please, Chris Wallace, don't pull a Robert Archibald or Troy Bell pick. Maybe we should draft...

Elliot Williams has decided to turn pro and sign with an agent. He's been told he's a mid-late first rounder. Hmm, sounds an awful lot like CDR a couple years ago. What happened there?...oh yeah, 40th pick...to the Nets. Anyhoo, I really hope he makes it on a good team with a chance to compete for playing time, but something about it just screams to me..."Ladies and gentleman, MVP of the 2011 D-League All-Star game, Elliot Williams!" Is this just me?

Probably didn't want to get lost in the mix next year when the recruits come in and steal his playing time.

Back the Grizzlies. It would be nice to "win" the lottery and get like 9-12 pick or something. Anyway, way too much basketball left before the draft...the playoffs are set!

West Round 1:

Lakers/Thunder - Sorry Thunder, it's not time-yet. Durant has 15 more years to try to win titles, Kobe does not. Lakers don't play this time of year. Lakers sweep.

Mavs/Spurs - Battle of Texas in the first round? I like it. Mavs are hot right now, but the Spurs are coming on, and they're healthy. RJ signing will make a difference in the playoffs, he'll basically cancel out Shawn Marion I would think. Caron Butler lifts the Mavs in Game 7.

Suns/Blazers - B-Roy doesn't play = Blazers can't win a series. There is no way. Injury filled season finally ends. Nasty Nash does his thing. STAT is playing like a monster (or a guy looking to sign an extension). Suns coast in 5.

Nuggets/Jazz - Nuggets have no coach, Jazz's best player is hurting (Boozer). Should be a good series. If Karl was on the sideline I'd say the Nuggets win easily, but Jerry Sloan knows what he's doing. I really hate the Jazz. Nuggets in 7.

East Round 1

Cavs/Bulls - Bulls barely got in the playoffs and their team is in turmoil and while I love watching D-Rose play (Did you see his reverse dunk a couple nights ago?), there is no way this series is close. Cavs in 5.

Magic/Bobcats - Bobcats in the playoffs? This won't last long. Magic pull out brooms and send Larry Brown back to Philly in the process. Magic sweep.

Hawks/Bucks - No Bogut for the Bucks means no win for the Bucks. I still don't think ATL is mentally strong enough to win the East, but they can handle the Bucks. Hawks in 6.

Celtics/Heat - Celtics are a locker room divided according to my sources. D-Wade will win 2-3 games for the Heat in the series, but C's will prevail in 7.

Nothing too exciting in those predictions.

With roughly 5 games left, there is still a lot of movement going on in the West for the 2-8 spots. I'm ready for some playoff hoops! Although, I seem to get excited every year about 40 games in 40 nights, but then it starts happening and I lose interest pretty fast in the first round. Oh well, I'm also ready for draft talk, free agency and trades. Let's speed this up a little!

I've been watching How to Make it in America on HBO. Started kinda slow but after the 3rd show it has really picked up. It's about two buddies in NYC that are trying hustle for every dollar as they try to get their clothing line started. There's not really any super famous people in it. The only person I had even heard of was Kid Cudi, but his role was greatly exaggerated in the previews, he's hardly been in the show. Check it out, it's only a half hour show so really it's like 25 minutes. All the shows are On Demand.

I hadn't really heard much from Asher Roth other than "College." I didn't really want to try to get into his music if he was just going to be one hit wonder. I've heard a few songs since then and decided to give his newest CD a chance. And it's pretty dope. He's got some hot tracks from some of the biggest producers in the game, including Kanye, Timbaland, Jus Blaze, 9th Wonder, Pharrell and RZA. And he has a song called "Rik Smits" how could you not give this a chance? I don't think he'll ever be a major mainstream rapper, but he could easily make a career in the underground/independent scene.

You want to here a great story? I'll will tell you something great, my students. Yesterday I had a little afternoon drinking session at The Bayou with a couple of friends. The UT-Mich St game was on. The restaurant was packed with orange, but also packed with UT haters and surprisingly quite a few Mich St fans. Anyway, the great part of the story is the burger I ate. It was fantastic. But what makes this an epically great story was that UT lost. And lost a close game. One they probably should have won. Nothing in life is better as a sports fan than seeing your most hated rivals fans being sad. Great.

And so we get back to Duke. If Duke wins one more game then Horace will win the NCAA pool (I'm not in it, so go Horace!). So I won't be extremely mad if the Dukies win one more. And, thinking about it, it would be pretty sweet to see them lose the title game...to Butler. However, me thinks we'll see a Duke vs Mich St title game.

Tigers:

So the season is officially over after the loss at Ole Miss.

Now the countdown is on for next year, when we should be preseason top 15 or so. Elliot Williams and Wesley Witherspoon both alluded to being back next year.

What I didn't like is the guys all talking about winning a title next year. Next year! You just lost a game to end your season and you're already thinking next year? Makes me think the NIT didn't really mean shit to them, which...I can understand. Will Coleman saying title or bust and E-Will saying similar things...I don't know, just seems like it wasn't the right time to bring that up.

In "Not So Shocking News" the NCAA denied our appeal of the 2008 season. So we officially have to take down the Final Four banner and I'm assuming the banner with the most wins on it. Stupid fucking Derrick Rose...

Marc is still day to day with the neck issue, but how about Thabeet playing well in the increased role? Averaging 8 and 8 in the last 4 games. If he could have averaged that all season that would have been nice but hopefully he'll continue to build confidence the rest of the year and work hard in the offseason.

11 games left in the season and we are 4 games back of the 8 spot. We do have some real tough games left, but we can definitely make a little push and hopefully we'll get some help from Portland or OKC. Even if we win 7 of the 11 that puts us at 45 wins total. Portland has already won 42 games so...yeah.

Happy St. Patrick's Day, students. Today we celebrate the great Irish holiday that requires all bars make their beer green and serve corned beef hash or bread pudding. Fucking disgusting.

Let us take a break a celebrate the man, St. Patrick, who drove the snakes out of Ireland that the Germans put there to scare the locals and try to conquer their territory. Rumor has it, St Patrick is really an American who just so happened to be a snake wrangler here in the States and put his trade to work while he was summering on the countryside. It is believed that he basically just stomped around drunk with a big stick and a clover covered green robe and scared all the snakes onto a boat in Dublin Harbor and then lit the boat on fire and pushed it safely away from the Irish. They all cheered and drank a Guinness. History was altered and a Saint was crowned.

NIT Madness Baby!

Been a minute since I updated here so haven't discussed the disaster that is Willie Kemp. So I've heard at least 5 people tell me the call on Kemp (double dribble/carry or whatever) was a bad call. No, it was the right call. You can maybe argue that you don't make that call in that situation. Or you could complain they didn't call a tech on the guy running on the court, or you could blame Pastner for not having Elliot Williams on the floor. Either way, we lost, I'm over it.

So we kick off our NIT run tomorrow against St. John's. I have no clue how good or bad they are. Potential second round game against Ole Miss would be fun, well...if we won. NIT is loaded with big name teams: UCONN, UNC, Illinois and NCAA outcasts like Va Tech and Miss. State.

So Kemp and Mack will have another "home" game. Will they ever leave?

I haven't even really looked at the brackets that much, probably fill mine out tonight. Think I'm going to do 2 brackets. My first bracket, I'm going to fill out without looking at "expert" picks. I'm just going with name recognition and players I like. The second bracket will probably be a little safer with educated picks and not just "Oh I like Gody, I'm going with Notre Dame."

I'm sure everybody will have Kentucky and Kansas in the Final Four. Could be fun tournament with no dominate teams.

Ronnie Brewer is set to return tonight against the Bulls. Might be too little too late on our playoff push. We are now 5 games out of the 8th spot and Portland and Houston are both on little winning streaks.

Celtics looked good last night as they Chris Brown-ed the Pistons. Note to Tony Allen and Nate Robinson, the little off the glass showboating last night was bush league. Hoop Family:

Just realized it's been a minute since I updated the world about Hoop Fam. Last night we had an awful start to the game and never could dig ourselves out of the hole. Think we lost by 14 points or so, but we started the game down 11-0. And they only had 5 guys and we had our full squad. We are definitely making strides as a team and it was cool having the whole team playing for probably only like the second time ever. Next week we play the Showstoppers and they haven't won a game (white folks). Also, Summer League sign-ups are coming up soon. This Hoop Family don't stop, sucka!

Grizzlies:

Back to back wins to get to 32-30. Still 4 games out of the 8th spot, but still in it for sure. OJ broke out a little mini slump last night and got 20 to compliment Z-Bo's 31 and 18 (beast) and we came back from 17 down to beat the Bulls on the road. Derrick Rose did put Randolph on a poster and Hakim Warrick played a few minutes and sucked

A note about LeBron James:

The Cavs have played and destroyed the Nets and Knicks in the last week. And, of course, Sportcenter continues to focus on where LBJ will play next year and those teams are contenders, I guess, for his services (cause really who the hell knows besides LeBron?). Anyway, they keep referencing, "After the Cavs beat the Knicks/Nets by 30 points, why would LeBron want to play for them? They don't have any help for him..etc"

Imagine this: Take Lebron off the Cavs and put him on the Knicks. The Cavs become the Knicks, maybe worse. The Knicks become the Cavs, maybe better, and have the best record in the league. David Lee is a younger Antawn Jamison. Gallinari is better than Delonte West and Anthony Parker combined. If LeBron can get Shaq 12 points and 8 rebounds I guarantee he can do the same for Eddy Curry. And this doesn't even count that they could sign LeBron and another good player.

So say they sign Lebron to the max. Then they sign...Rudy Gay (for example) for less than max. Then they resign Lee. That core three will have you in contention for the East title every year. Then they have Gallinari and (possibly) T-Mac as your spot up wing players. It's not hard to be one of the best teams in the East. Boston's window is closing fast. Atlanta is rising. Orlando should be contenders for as long as they surround Howard with good players. The Bulls and Heat have a chance to vault into contention if they play free agency the right way.

Me and Roser had some good NBA talks last night and I think he agrees with me on this: The max we pay Rudy is $11.5 mil a year. He is not worth $12 mil. It would be nice to get him for $10 mil, but unlikely. And I'm ok with paying a 23 year old 20 point scorer that much. As Roser mentioned, he's a community guy. Never in trouble with the law, no baby mama drama, no thug mentality. He is a good look for the city. Same with OJ and Marc.

Seems like I say this for every game played for both Tigers and Grizzlies, but tonight's games are both games we need to win.

Tigers:

Play at UAB tonight in a game that will go along way in determining C-USA tourney seeding. Well LA DE FREAKIN DAH! Too bad that last sentence wasn't "This game will go a long way in determining NCAA seeding." I still feel like we can win the C-USA tourney whether or not we get a top 2 seed. C-USA sucks, remember?

If you told me before the year we'd be 30-30 through 60 games I would have been thrilled. But now, we're just blowing chance after chance to get in the playoff mix. I'm still going to be happy at the end of the season with an above .500 record, but knowing that we could be in the playoffs with some timely victories makes all these home loses even more frustrating.

Tonight we head to the The Big Easy for a division game against the Hornets. X-factor is Marcus Thorton. I saw him play a little against the Mavs and he is the exact type of player the Grizzlies have never been able to stop. A slasher/scorer type that has no business scoring 12 points against anybody but will probably get 25+ against us.

Thankfully, I missed the Charlotte game. I don't understand how they have our number, but every time I see them on the schedule, I think auto-win. But we always lose! Again, no bench help.

Happy Mexican- I actually have some video of their cheese and salsa, but I don't for the rest, so I'm not using it. (and really, who wants to see a bowl of salsa?). Happy Mexican gets the win because I like non-chunky salsa and I like it a little hot. First time I went there a few months ago, the salsa was the perfect consistency, but lacked in the flavor (hot) department. I've been back many times since and every time the consistency has remained the same, but it has also been a little hotter too.
Tie- Los Pilares and Los Compadres - They were the exact same. A little chunky, good flavor. I would not be able to tell the difference if you put them in front of me.

Cheese Dip Ranking:

Three Way Tie - I love cheese dip, and when it comes to Mexican restaurants, they all taste the same.

So Kobe misses 18 days and then notices the Grizz on the schedule and say, "Hmm, there's an easy 30, I'll come back against them." Damn! Maybe he'll come out rusty or disrupt the rhythm the Lakers have had while he's been out. But probably not. We need this one. We have to stay above .500, we just have to. Looks like we'll be battling NO and Houston for the 8th spot currently held by the Blazers. So we still have to jump all three of those teams. Yikes. Having Ronnie Brewer during this crucial stretch would have been nice, but his hammy had other ideas. Brewer was doing exactly what he was suppose to, getting the steal in the open court and about to go in for the finish and he pulls up lame with the torn hamstring. That's like getting to second base with some new-new and you're rounding the bases and you realize she's on the rag....for a month. So while you're waiting out that month, and still excited about the potential outcome, you also realize a lot could happen in that month. Can the Grizz keep it together long enough to get Brewer back in the mix and still make a charge for the 8th spot? If we stay around .500, then we will not be a factor. We have to start winning games and put together another run. Brrr!

Movies:

Shutter Island - Really good movie. Slightly predictable, but the ending is ridonkulous. ***Spoiler Alert*** So at the end of the movie when Leo's sitting there with Mark Ruffalo and he's saying, "They can't hold us. We could get out of here" or whatever and Ruffalo looks at the docs and shakes his head that he is not "healed" or whatever. But then Leo voluntarily walks with the orderlies to get his brain scrambled by that ice pick. He would rather live as a ghost with no knowledge of his situation than live with knowing he killed his wife after she murdered their kids. He was healed! And he still went with them! That's pretty fucked. The more I think about the movie, the more I like it. 3.445 stars out 4.

District 9 - I was told by a friend that whatever you expect out of this movie, it's completely different. And he was right. Yes, it's about aliens, but really it's about way more than that. And the gore and stuff is almost comical. Very well done. I can't even really explain the plot without giving away too much. You just have to watch it. 2.59 out of 4.

What's worse: The fact that we let freaking Tulane hang around the whole game or the awful announcing by the CSS guys? Will Witherspoon. Willie Sims. Who are those players? Brian Oliver and Dave Something...awful.

Big news coming today regarding Elliot Williams, who tweaked his knee. If he misses some games, that could be trouble. Although according to my homie, Alfred, "Elliot William so sorry." Which could be true, since he really hasn't done much against good teams, but if he's not our best player, he's second best behind the increasingly good play of Wesley Witherspoon, who had 16 points 9 boards and 5 steals last night. Also, I know I bash Roburt Sallie a lot, but he has been playing really well lately. Coleman put up decent numbers, but he still has no clue on defense.

Rematch with SMU is Saturday.

Grizz:

Grizzlies giving the fans a little scare last night after blowing the doors off early. Starters once again looked sharp, even Conley (more on that guy in a minute). Our bench is still shit. At one point we had Marcus Williams, Sam Young DeMarre Carroll, Darrell Arthur (how bout DA showing some range last night) and Marc Gasol on the floor. Who is scoring in that lineup? Once again, no Tinsley, Thabeet or Lester Hudson.

Trades:

Multiple sources have said the Grizz are shopping Mike Conley and a potential deal involving OJ Mayo and Monta Ellis that was rejected by the Warriors. I guess I'm alright with shopping Conley, but we have to get a point guard back in return right? If we trade Conley then we're stuck with Williams and Tinsley? That might be the worst back court ever.

As far as OJ, I'm not in love with Monta Ellis. I know he's good, I've watched him torch the Grizz several times, but for OJ? I don't see Ellis being the team player OJ is. If we do the deal for Ellis, where does that leave Rudy? I think Rudy can play better with OJ than Ellis. Maybe we let Rudy go and build around Ellis and Z-Bo? Who knows? But I do know this:

The Rockets got better. Rockets ship T-Mac, Carl Landry and Joey Dorsey to Kings for Kevin Martin and some throw ins. Losing Landry hurts, but adding a top 10 scorer is quite nice. With a healthy Ming next year, they could make some noise. Of course, that's what they've been saying in Houston since T-Mac joined Yao.

Update: Knicks traded for T-Mac. Rockets still get Kevin Martin in addition to Jordan Hill and Jared Jeffries. Knicks gave up on Hill pretty fast. So the Rockets got a lot better. With T-Mac expiring contract, the Knicks now the cap space to sign 2 max deal players this offseason. The LeBron/Wade sweepstakes just took a huge turn.

Not so sure about this Jamison to the Cavs deal. If I'm the Cavs and I'm trying to keep LeBron, I don't get a 33 year old player, who in 2 years will be putting up Grant Hill numbers as a role player. If I'm Danny Ferry and I can't get Amare, I go younger wing guy, like Iguodala or Kevin Martin or Caron Butler even. Oh well, they'll lose in the first round to Charlotte and LBJ will leave anyway.

Big night for USA in the Olympics last night. Big wins for Shani Davis, Shaun White and Lindsey Vonn all taking Gold. I don't have much commentary on the Olympics, I can't really tell if someone had "a good run" unless I see them racing someone and not a clock. There is a strange phenomenon that has been happening to me for as long as I can remember. Every time I eat Pop Tarts, I immediately have to shit. Like, before I finish the Pop Tarts, I have to shit. This happens every time without fail. Even if I just woke up, took a poo, and then ate a package of PT's, I'm in the bathroom no later than 10 minutes. Matter of fact, that happened this morning! Just thought I'd share.

Tigers:

Tigers beat UCF at home last night 76-70. How is Will Coleman only playing 17 minutes? Isn't he our only post guy left? Mack and Sallie both benched to start the game for "disciplinary reasons." Hmm, Niles quits, Mack and Sallie benched...maybe Pastner rubbing some guys the wrong way. Of course, when you go to competing for NCAA title to barely beating UCF, I can see how you could lose focus.

NBA:

So Houston is about to get a lot better. They trade T-Mac (who hasn't done a damn thing this year!) to the Knicks and get Caron Butler, Brenden Haywood and another player (Hughes, Curry or Jeffries). The Wizards get Al Harrington from the Knicks.

So basically, the Rockets are giving up nothing in terms of players or draft picks and they're getting an All-Star and a solid big man. The Knicks get their cap space as T-Mac's deal expires after this year and the Wiz get Harrington. The only team getting better in this deal is the Rockets. If the deal does go through, I would assume the Rockets would be able to secure a playoff spot, thus leaving probably only one spot for the rest of the middle of the pack teams to fight for.

Right now, San Antonio is the 7th seed! OKC has jumped to 5th with their 6 game win streak. It's going to be interesting to see how this is going to play out, because right now, the top 8 teams are the best 8 in the West. The 9, 10 and 11 goes like Houston, NO and Memphis. Even if that trade goes through, the Rockets still have to hope that somebody slips from the 6, 7 or 8 spot. They are clearly better than us if the trade goes through, so that means we really have to get hot in the second half and hope Tim Duncan gets a tumor and Steve Nash dies of heart failure. NOLA still doesn't have Chris Paul so you have to think they'll start to lose focus and then lose games. This trade could be a huge blow to our playoff chances. But all the trades won't even matter if we don't start winning games.

To all teams that want to trade for Amare Stoudemire. Please take a second and review the career of Jermaine Oneal. Are you done? Ok, now slap your face. Amare has maybe 2-3 good years left but he's going to hit that 30 year old wall and start filling up the STAT sheets with DNP's. He's already had one microfracture surgery and a major eyeball surgery. JO got that $120 mil contract, had a few good years, then it all went to shit and he's what 31 years old? He averages 13 points and 7 rebounds. And you know how much money he's making this year? $23 million. Why would a team invest max to near max money with Stoudemire? He also seems to have ego issues and oh yeah, doesn't play defense. But it will happen, some owner will pay him big bucks before the new CBA agreement and he'll be the next JO, getting traded or rumored to be traded for his expiring contract, while he averages bench player production and still thinks he's First Team All NBA.

Everyone's favorite gravy sipping fat boy has quit the Memphis Tigers team. Yes, Pierre Henderson Niles has quit the basketball team with 8 games left.

What the fuck took so long? Hey, all you stupid Memphis fans who stood and cheered every time he grabbed a loose ball or made a free throw...I bet you guys fell stabbed in the back, huh? This guy had the city wrapped around his finger and then he quits on us. What a garbage ass person. That's why I never cheered when he made a free throw (He's suppose to make it!). He made us put up with his weight issues, his bad attitude, poor work ethic and then the ridiculous name change this year. Peace out, Pierre, you will not be missed.

Last night I attempted to watch I love You, Man with Paul Rudd and Jason Segal. Complete waste of time. Neither one of their characters is likable and the rest of the cast, which was really good, was wasted in this dumb ass movie. There was one scene where I literally fell off the couch laughing, but that's about it. I didn't even finish watching it. I give it a 1.23 out of 4 stars. Extremely disappointing.

Hoop Family:

The shorthanded Hoop Family pulls out an impressive win over the Showstoppers last night at St. Lukes Arena. We overcame missing our two biggest guys and a feisty home crowd from the Showstopper fans. Close game throughout, but super sub Scottie the Body buries three crucial three pointers and gets a big steal late to put us up for good. Final score was 44-37 (I think). We have now won 2 games.

Grizzlies:

Big game tonight against Houston. Grizz have had some days off to regroup and rest. I look for Z-Bo and OJ to be back to normal and the Grizz should win this game at home.

Rumors are floating around the Grizz may go after former Tiger Chris Douglas Roberts to strengthen the bench. Umm...do that please. He's an ideal bench scorer and probably way cheaper than Ronnie Brewer. Come on Wallace, make up for not drafting him in the first place. We could prob get him for a late first round pick, which is what I'm sure the Nets would want.

Tigers:

Big win over UAB Wednesday night hopefully leads to some momentum going into the Gonzaga game on Saturday afternoon. Spoon seems to be finding his game at the right time and E-Wil is still ballin. Now, if we could just do something about the rest of the guys...

Grizzlies:

Huge win at home against the Lakers 95-93.

After the game, Sportscenter came on not too long after and the Lakers/Grizz game was top story with Kobe setting Lakers scoring record. They showed almost all of Kobe's buckets and the only Grizz highlight was Rudy's 3 late in the game and Conley's missed free throws. And that was it. The rest was Kobe. After the game...more Kobe interviews.

Let ESPN keep sleeping on us! We haven't earned the coverage we deserve, but we are getting closer and beating teams like the Lakers will only help us.

Books?

Well this is a classroom, and reading is fundamental. So I have a book review for you.

Tracy Morgan - I Am the New Black.

Before I read Morgan's book I had previously read Artie Lange's book, Too Fat to Fish, which has the same co-author (Anthony Bozza) as Tracy Morgans, so I'm assuming that they will be similarly hilarious. And while Tracy's book is funny and it read just as if he were talking, which is funny as hell, there just weren't enough funny stories in it. The whole Artie book I was dying reading his funny stories. Tracy Morgan's book is more about his family struggles and coming up as a black comic, which is all fine and interesting, but I want to hear stories about him and Will Ferrell doing coke off Tina Fey's butt cheeks...but nothing. He told one funny famous person story and it was near the end of the book. Anyway, I still love Tracy Morgan, and will continue to laugh at his comedy, but his book was very average. I will give a rating of 2.12 out of 4 stars. For comparison sake, Artie's book gets a 3.99 out of 4.

Well after two losses on Friday to the Spurs and Saturday to the Hornets, the Grizz currently sit in 10th place in the West. Not to mention that tonight we host the Lakers and tomorrow travel to Cleveland to face the Cavs. Ouch. Tough stretch. We really needed that win at home against the Hornets. Now, we're riding back to back losses as we go against the two best teams in the NBA today and tomorrow.

Chris Paul is having knee surgery and is expected to miss at least one month. We have to put distance between them and us while he is out. I do not want NOLA hanging around for a month and then getting a hungry CP3 back for a playoff run. PHX (7th place) at NO (8th) tonight.

Lost to SMU Saturday. 70-60. Never thought I'd type that.

Blah:

Pretty slow weekend with all the ice and bad weather here. I did manage to make it to the Grizzlies game Saturday. However, Manny K and I decided to walk to the liquor store around 2 that day, and by the time the game rolled around...I shouldn't have gone anywhere. Took a spill outside the Forum and sat through the game with my ass soaking wet. Fun stuff. Thanks for the tickets Nate Boogie.

Grammys:

The Grammys performances are hit and miss with me. I couldn't care less about most of them, but some are good. Lady Gaga with Elton John was cool I guess. Beyonce worked it out. But the hottest performance might have been Lil Wayne, Drake, Eminem and Travis Barker to close out the show. They did a little medley of "Drop the World" and "Forever"

So the Grizzlies could have at least made an attempt to get David Lee, granted we would have had to overpay him. According to Ric Bucher, Heisley gave the big "NO" Why? And I don't think they have a problem playing defense or playing within a system. So yeah, if you want those bad qualities, signing Randolph was great.

Grizzlies beat the Pistons in the Palace last night. As I was discussing with the fellas last night, if we want to be considered a truly "good" team in the NBA, we have to win road games against crap teams. Last night was big. It was close game that we led most of the time, the Pistons made a run to grab the lead late and Marc Gasol shut them bitches down! Last year, we lose that game. Having a team play with confidence is much more fun to watch.

Gotta mention the bench again. Outscored 33-4. We need help ASAP.

Note: I had no idea Chris Wilcox played last night, and started, until I saw the box score this morning. I didn't hear his name one time when I was watching. 1 point 1 rebound. There was a time when I thought the Grizz needed to make a move for Wilcox...another miss by Johnson. Sheesh.

Tigers:

Honestly I didn't watch but maybe 5 minutes total of the Tigers game. But I did see the end. And I watched as Pierre "Crystal Palace" Niles nearly cost us the game. Some guy named Shaquille Johnson missed two free throws for them late and Sallie sealed the win with 2 free throw makes. We are now 15-5 and in 3rd place in C-USA.

While Gordon Bombay was busy trying to turn his bunch of hockey scrubs into contenders to beat the Hawks, he lucked into a street kid named Fulton Reed from Stillwater, MN (thanks Roser). Reed was an imposing figure and had one hell of a slap shot. The next year in the Olympics, Coach Bombay also added another bruiser named Dean Portman from Chicago, IL to help control the Iceland assholes. Together they formed the Bash Brothers.

What the hell are you talking about, Johnson? Mighty Ducks? Seriously?

Yes, motherfucker, seriously.

Think about this, students. Coach Hollins was handed a big man that needed some coaching, but with a little help he would become a core part of the Grizzlies (Marc Gasol). The next season, we add another bruiser that became Marc's Bash Brother (Zach Randolph). And together, they are taking the Grizz to the Olympic Gold! Oh wait...the NBA Playoffs! Maybe.

Grizzlies get another big win at home versus another top team. Grizzlies beat the Magic 99-94. Z-Bo goes for 23 and 19 to lead the way and hit a past half court shot to beat the halftime buzzer that put the Grizz up 2 after being down by 16 early on. We are now 24-19, which matches last season win total. We are also the 8th seed in the West right now.

However, the bench again played like doo doo. They shot 4-11 for 8 points. After the breakout game by Thabeet on Friday he was back to his usual lost looking ass. So let's get some trade talk going Chris Wallace. We need a bench scorer (how perfect would it have been if AI accepted that role?). The rumor of Dorrell Wright and Ronnie brewer continue to circulate and I hope they keep circulating until one of them is a Grizzly...or anyone comparable really

Also, where is an update on Darrell Arthur? It'd be nice having him back up Z-Bo instead of Demarre.

Peyton and Brees for the Super Bowl. That's not too bad. The Jets jumped all over Indy early and all that did was wake up the best QB in football. Colts come back and dominate the rest of the game. The Gunslinger may have finally shot his last round in NOLA last night. Favre, fittingly, throws a pick as the Viking were about to set up for the winning FG in regulation. Saints take victory in OT.

For the record, I'm going for the Saints.

So will Favre retire? Tough call, but he looked beat up as hell after that game. Truly there is nothing left to prove for Favre, but...there really wasn't anything to prove 2 years ago when he retired either, so we'll see. I say he's done.

Huge win last night at the Forum for the young cubs (oxymoron?). I am Rudy Gay and Loving IT right now! Ha. Rudy buries the 20 footer over Kevin Durant with 1.3 left. Ballgame. 86-84. OJ had a horrible night shooting going 1-12 and I guarantee that if we lost that game that stat would be the reason (from the media's standpoint). Anyway, why am I dwelling on that? Lets talk about ThaBEAST! Hasheem played his best game ever and didn't even take a shot. 9 boards, 4 blocks and countless other "altering" plays. Congrats, big fella, you're out of the doghouse for one game. How about Mike Conley making 4-5 from deep? Also just a big win for confidence and basically making a statement against the supposed "best young team" in the Thunder. We've been getting a lot of good pub from the media, but they always mention the Thunder ahead of us.

So after all the shit talking on my own team yesterday, we come out with a big win last night 52-38. Everybody played pretty well. Of course playing against another team of all whites that were just as slow as us helped a lot. I played a pretty up and down game, had a few baskets a few blocks, an airball from 2 feet, busted some guys eyebrow open...you know how I do. Who knows what the hell will happen next week, but for now, we celebrate!

Grizzlies:

Tonight the Thunder come to Memphis looking to end our home winning streak. Shout out to Roser for the ticket hookup. I can't fully decide if we're better than OKC, but they do have Kevin Durant, and he's better than anybody we got...so I'll tip my cap and give the Thunder a slight edge, but we will win tonight.

NFL:

Jets/Colts: Peyton has never lost against a Rex Ryan D. Colts win. And really, who the hell cares about this game?

Vikings/Saints: I have no cool stat for this game. Favre>Brees. Peterson>Bush/Bell/McAllister combined. Viking D>Saints D. Vikes win as Hurricane Favre breaks a few levees...err...records for oldest man to throw a football. Although, I will be rooting for whoever wins this game to win the Super Bowl. After Favre beats the Saints he is asked to replace Drew Brees as Mardi Gras float leader host guy.

Not to be Debbie Downer but I am really looking forward to a Tiger team without Willie Kemp, Roburt Sallie, Doneal Mack and Pierre Niles. Those once unbeatable Tigers lost to UTEP last night, ending the 64 game conference win streak, which wouldn't have even counted cause we used illegal players. This season can't end fast enough. I'm ready for Barton, Crawford and Jackson.

Tough loss last night as former Grizz fan favorite James Posey seals the win with a layup. Grizz have a chance to tie at the end. We have the ball at midcourt after the timeout with 0.8 to go. Rudy for three? OJ? No, we throw a lob to Rudy toward the rim...it's batted down before he gets a hand on it, game over. I am not ever (this year anyway) going to call out Coach Hollins, but damn! 0.8 is plenty of time for OJ to bury a game winner, or at least get a decent look. I will call out Rudy on his ghostly defensive effort last night. You want max money, Rudy? Fucking D up you pussy. But in all seriousness, I love you Rudy.

Also, some talk of us going after Ronnie Brewer from the Jazz to give our bench some scoring it needs. I like that trade, especially if we just give up a late first round pick. Gotta make that trade.

Hoop Family:

Me and boys are back on the hardwood tearing up the comp...oh wait, we lost by 53 our first game. We are getting crushed in the new league. Rather sad. Game tonight against the Robot Chickens at 8:15. Last I checked we were 35 point underdogs. Put your money on Hoop Family, the other team stops playing D after they get up by 30-40 points, so that's when we make our move and get it to a respectable 20 point loss. It's not as fun blogging about our team when we have no chance to even win a game in this league. As far as roster we've got:

What up Internet peeps? Miss me? Been hiding out with Tiger in Hattiesburg. I decided that putting a bunch of random rap videos and all my views on sports on my Facebook seems a little crazy, not nearly as free as I can be on this here bloggo. A whole hell of a lot has happened since I last blogged. But I'm not here to back track, I'm here to talk about the here and now. And for now, the motherfucking Memphis Grizzlies are balling! The Memphis Tigers are decent I guess, but they are not nearly as fun to watch this year.

Grizzle:

As of today, the Grizzlies are not in last place as they hold a one game lead over the New Orleans Hornets in the Southwest Division. Tonight we play the Hornets in a crucial (eh, not crucial, but you know) game in NOLA. Take away our 1-8 start (thanks Iverson) and we are 21-10.

Tigers:

Going for the most consecutive conference wins ever tonight against UTEP and former Tiger ass coach Tony Barbie (that was on purpose). I'm still not excited about the game. It's going to be a grind out game win or lose and lets face it: the Tigers are boring to watch now. Little worried about the outcome, UTEP pays er plays Derrick Caracter, a beast inside who will make PHN and "Lost" Will Coleman look like Lady Tigers.

Of course there is million other things to discuss going on, but we'll keep it short and sweet today and I'll be back sooner than you think with a well thought out post, unlike this spur of the moment piece you got today. Hope you stick with me, I will never leave you again.

What I missed most about blogging was the random music I put up. I feel dumb doing that on FB, most of those turds don't understand and just think I'm stupid or listen to bad music. You guys, and girl?, get me. I appreciate it.

Still slow in the sports world, but it's about to kick off huge this weekend.

Tigers

Tiger football gets under way this weekend with a big game against those douches from Ole Miss. This is the final game in the contract with the Rebs, so this means it might be the last meaningful game we play ever. Well, we do play UT later this year, but I think that contract is about up too (I actually have no idea). Anyway, since I can't get anybody to donate me a ticket I'll be watching on ESPN.

Side Note: They sell beer at Tiger games now. What the hell took so long?

Tiger basketball has added a superstar recruit. 6'7 whitey from CBHS. Too lazy to look up his name, Durham or something. Who was the last white guy who played for the Tigers that was 6'7 and played guard? Justin Wimmer maybe? Baller.

I have two drafts this weekend. In one I actually have the #1 pick. I really want to take DeAngelo, but I might not be invited back next year if I don't take Peterson...so we'll see.

I saw Inglorious Basterds last week. Very good. Way more funny than I thought. Brad Pitt is great in it and the bad guy is unbelievable. Pretty gory scenes as is with every Tarantino movie. 3.643 starts out of 4. Go watch it!

So our entire 2007-08 season has been wiped from the record books after we used an ineligible player, Derrick Rose. Who, after failing his SAT three times, decided it would be better to have someone else take it for him. We cheated, we got caught. So now, the best season ever has been tarnished, our coach has left, our recruits left and we're on probation. And how about Calkins calling for RC Johnson's job? And Shirley Raines.

Good news: Elliot Williams has been cleared to play this season.

J-Will signs with Orlando. Makes more sense than the Grizzlies, but I would still love to have him.
Michael Vick signed with Philly and will make his debut on Thursday. About time, I say. I watched the James Brown 60 Minutes interview and I believe him. I think he has changed. With what happened to him, how could not change?

While doing my usual browsing of internet sports, I came across something so...bizarre and just absolutely baffling that it can not be ignored.

Vince Young, as quoted by Esquire magazine :

"I don't know when I'll start again. But I will be the next black quarterback to win a Super Bowl. And I will be in the Hall of Fame."

What?! I don't know whether to laugh at that or to pray for this guy's mental health. Vince, first of all, lets worry about you starting a game. I don't think there's too many HoF quarterbacks who came from the second string. Probably not too many HoF guys got benched for sucking and then lost their job to a QB that was washed up and old (Kerry Collins). HoF QB's don't go missing and have the police looking for them because people think you're going to commit suicide.

Next black quarterback to win a Super Bowl? Hmm, I guess the Titans have a legit shot at getting to the Super Bowl. So maybe Collins gets hurt in the AFC Championship Game and Vince plays the Super Bowl and they somehow win? Ok, Vince, I'll give you that one. But why black quarterback? Why don't you want to be the next quarterback to win the SB? So what if McNabb wins? Jason Campbell? David Garrard? Every time Vince opens his mouth, he just gets more and more stupid.

I need to touch more on the HoF part of the comment. Here is what you have going for you in the quest for HoF: you can run fast. Here is what you have going against you: IQ, accuracy, fragile legs...oh yeah, and you're not even a starter! Vince will clearly not have HoF numbers (pass yards, TD passes etc), agreed? So that means he needs to win like 5 Super Bowls and get MVP in at least 3 of them.

Let me break down a few QB's better than Vince right now, that aren't locks for the Hall:

Drew Brees - needs a SB, but the numbers will be there at the end of his career
Donavan McNabb - No SB, but plenty of NFC Title games. Good numbers and plays hurt.
Eli Manning - SB MVP, as much as I hate him, he gets better and better.
Jay Cutler - Will continue to put up monster years, will have a chance for SB with Bears defense

I think all those guys have a legit shot at being a Hall of Famer, but they all need to do more before the end of their careers. Vince? What has he done in his 4 years? 22 TDs 32 INTs. 57% completion and 68.8 passer rating. You're 26 now, Vince, time to start doing something and stop talking about it.

I can't even say that I like his enthusiasm about being the next black QB or HoF QB. Because I know that deep down in my heart...he will fail. He just doesn't get it. Hey Vince, do you like fish sticks? Everyone else gets it.

One more thing: Hall of Fame players don't usually get photographed doing this: Where are the ladies, Vince?

11am - Game Show Network for Jeopardy and the Wheel of Fortune
12 noon - $25000 Pyramid is on GSN, but no one really watches it

I've been catching up on some old TV shows I miss, such as the A-Team on Netflix.com. If you have Netflix, they have a ton of crap you can watch for free on your computer. I'm about halfway through Season 1.

Recent stuff I've watched: I finally watched Gunnin for that #1 Spot which follows a bunch of high school players around before a big showcase game at Rucker Park a few years ago. The movie is pretty good if you're a die hard basketball fan. They follow Tyreke Evans, Kevin Love, Brandon Jennings, Jered Bayless, Lance Stephenson and a few others in their hometowns. For all of the guys, except Love, it's basically these guys gettingout of the hood with their hoop skillzzz. 3 out of 4 stars. It is what it is. You know if you'll like it before you watch it.

Yesterday I watched Righteous Kill with De Niro and Pacino. I waited a while to watch it because I never read one good review and never heard anyway say they saw it. But I figure if those two Hollywood Titans of Film were in it, it couldn't be horrible, right? They play a team of detectives looking for whoever is killing pimps, drug dealers and other no good jerks. While the whole story is not bad, it does seem a little too put together just to get these guys to be in a movie together. Well, I'm a sucker for that shit cause I liked it. Don't want to talk too much about it cause it's full of twists and turns. 50 Cent makes an appearance as (what else?) a drug dealer, Rob Dyrdek (from Rob and Big) has a sweet cameo and the movie also stars John Leguizamo and Donnie Wahlberg. There's also some slutty girl, whose character is completely worthless. Don't pay money to watch it, but I'll give it a 2.98 out of 4 stars.

Note: What has happened to Al Pacino? Dude needs a stylist. His hair is crazy goofy looking.

Garbage Time

We can out blazing last night to take a 17-2 lead on Incarnation and held off the late rally to pull through 51-48 and improve our record to 3-4. Reptile Reid had a monster game and hit 2 clutch free throws to seal. I hit a three pointer, then missed badly on my second three pointer, you know, gotta even it out a little. Nevertheless, big win without three of our top scorers/shooters. We look to finish .500 next Tuesday in the regular season final.

Latavious Williams will not play for Memphis next year as he will head to Europe for a year a la Brandon Jennings. Difference you ask? Jennings was the #1 one player in his class, but did not qualify academically to play for Arizona. Williams is not the top guy in his class, top 20, but still, and he hasn't received his scores to even know if he is eligible to play. Have fun living overseas and ruining your life, dumbass. He'll get drafted when the time comes, but it'll be late first round or second round. If he played a couple years at Memphis and took the team to a couple NCAA tourneys...I like his chances better. This will be a decision he will regret for the rest of his life. Prediction: The NBA will overturn the one year rule soon after Williams decision becomes official.

Students, sorry for the extended absence. Honestly, I've been kinda busy at work and well...there hasn't been a damn thing going on in sports that I care about.

Lets recap:

MLB All-Star Game. Sorry, Pants, the game is boring and too long. Cut the number of players. Adam Jones? Really?

NASCAR driver test positive for meth...again. If they let these rednecks drive around high on meth for 500 laps...that I might watch.
I want to get excited about the huge numbers that some players are putting up in Summer League, but then I remember that is is the Summer League. I mean, Anthony Randolph putting up 42 and 12? If the guy averaged 8 points this year I'd be impressed. 'Reke is ballin' though.
One thing that did happen was the murder one of my top 3 favorite boxers of all-time, Arturo Gatti. "Thunder" was an absolute beast in the ring. His trilogy with Micky Ward is one of my favorite sports "rivalries" to watch. (Wasn't really a rivalry because they liked each other.) Watch Gatti-Ward I, the first fight. I used to be obsessed with those fights, but that's my favorite. Side Note - Mark Wahlberg is making a movie about the life of Micky Ward. Just read that they're showing all three fights on HBO this weekend. DVR is set.

The Grizzlies appear to be STACK-ing the roster, looking for a full-HOUSE. Get it? Eh?

Sparing you all the details you already know, the Grizzlies have acquired Jerry Stackhouse from the Mavs. It appears he will be bought out and never wear the Beale Street Blue.

However, another vet appears to be considering the Grizzlies. Allen Iverson is apparently going to meet with Heisley and talk contract. I'm not going to waste too much time going into how I feel about this move, but I'll give you a little something:

Summer League Update:

Team Garbage Time has a pulse! While struggling with our shooting in the first half, we put the clamps down and overcame a double digit deficit to win. Which is odd, because usually we're up double digits and lose. So it was nice to actually see us playing team ball and pulling out the victory. Roser broke out of his year long slump to score 7 points, including a dagger three late in the game. The win brings our record to 2-3.

Other Sports Biz:

If Lance Cheatstrong wins another Tour, I'm going to pull a Sahel Kazemi.
Manny ejected last night after arguing a called third strike. I caught some of John Kruk on ESPN saying how this is the Manny in Boston and how Manny is selfish and isn't a team player. Hmm, ok, except the Dodgers won 8-0. Manny was 2-4 with 3 RBI's. And as Manny himself said, "I only play five innings anyway, so it was no big deal." Fuckin' Kruk.

So the Grizzlies could have at least made an attempt to get David Lee, granted we would have had to overpay him. According to Ric Bucher, Heisley gave the big "NO" Why? Why not at least try to get Lee or Paul Milsap? As far as I know, neither of those guys is a locker room cancer (I hate that term by the way). And I don't think they have a problem playing defense or playing within a system. So yeah, if you want those bad qualities, signing Randolph was great.

Meanwhile:

The Cavs appear on the verge of getting Ron Artest and Trevor Ariza. Hmm. Championship parade in Cleveland next year? Mo Williams, LeBron, Ariza, Artest and Shaq.

The Pistons will sign Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva. Solid signings for the Pistons. Stuckey, Rip, BG, Tayshaun, Villanueva, Maxiell...not bad.

Everything I've heard from people is this: Z-Bo's contract only has 2 years left. So he plays one year and if he sucks in that second year, the last year of his contract, he'll be a hot commodity because of his $17 mil coming of the books. So it looks like we'll have him for about a season and a half, right? What the fuck are going to do in that season and a half? We're not winning shit with this fucker on our team. So instead of having a Milsap or Lee for 4-6 years and building something, we'll be in the exact same position in 2 years that we are in this year. A few thoughts on the Grizz:

Don't do a trade for Zack Randolph!

Do a sign and trade for David Lee

Or just sign Charlie Villanueva. Although it appears the Cavs and Pistons are also interested...not good for us.

I'm not a huge fan of Boozer, but if we had him, we'd be really good. Although it now looks like he'll stay in Utah and the Jazz will let....

Paul Milsap is reportedly being offered 5 year $65 mil from OKC. That is what the Grizz will have to do, overpay somebody...like we didn't do last year with J-Smoove. Don't get me wrong, I think Milsap deserves to get paid, but $13 mil per?

Chris Herrington wrote an article about backup PG's we might could sign. I'd like to review the list.

Like:

Keyon Dooling - I like his game, and even though it seems like he's been around for 20 years, he's only 29, and makes less than $4 mil per. He's also basically a career backup, so I don't think he'd bitch about playing time.

Jarrett Jack - Solid PG. Might be better than Conley. Certainly more confident than MC.

Brevin Knight - Old reliable. Don't love it, but it would be a low cost-no risk sign.

Don't Like:

Antonio Daniels - And I would think he has no interest in playing for us.

CJ Watson - Shoots too much, he would bitch about playing time. I actually have no idea...I just don't like him.

Marquis Daniels - What?! NO!

Team #6 lost the consolation game last night dropping our record to 1-5 to end the season. Our two best players, John and Jonathan, decided to blaze a fatty before the game and show up late. I think we were down 15-17 points when they showed up. We lost 92-69. Yes, we gave up 92 points. We did have a drunken pizza party after the game and that was awesome. Not sure which team won the championship game but the only team we beat was playing in it, so there's a chance we beat the champs. Shout out to the coolest team I've played on, Team 6, Byron, Mike, Pat, John, Jonathan, the one guy who played once and was kicked out and Horace. "Turn ya swag on!"

Anyway, I don't have much today. Sports world is slow.

First things first: R.I.P to Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson.

NBA Draft:

So I came to the conclusion that if the Grizzlies didn't make any trades and stood pat with the 2 and took Thabeet that I would consider that a bad draft. So what did the Grizz do? The Grizzles made a small trade and did take Thabeet at 2.

I've decided I'm not going to be bitter. I'm going to give Thabeet a chance. I feel if he can be as good as Gasol was last year, then that can't be a terrible thing. Twin Towers in Memphis!? Ehh...

That being said, we passed on Rubio, Evans, Curry etc. Kinda sad. Rubio slipped to #5 going to Minny and now he said he's considering playing a year or two in Spain before coming back. HA! Evans goes to Sacto and Curry goes to G-State, where he's rumored to be a part of a huge trade to PHX for Amare.

We did pick up a couple "tough" guys in Demarre Carroll and Sam Young.

We also traded Darko for Quentin Richardson. I have never been a fan of Q, but I guess we don't need Darko and we could use the outside shooting.

So I would assume our team would look like this:

PG-Conley
SG-Mayo
SF-Rudy
PF-Arthur
C-Gasol

Bench looking like: Thabeet, Hak, Q-Rich, Buckner, Ross, Young, Carroll, Haddadi and Jaric. I don't know how much better that is than last season. Hopefully Buck and Ross are given pink slips and told to bounce.

Other Notes:

Vinsanity to the Magic? I like it. Doubt they resign Turk now. Let someone else overpay that guy.
Rob Dozier gets drafted! Last. Going to Miami, have fun in the D-League, Bobby D.
Cavs with Shaq. I'm not sure I put them ahead of a healthy Celtics team or the Magic right now. Depends how old Shaq plays. If he does a repeat of last year with 18 and 9 a game, then they'll be tough to beat. But if he struggles with injuries all year, it could be a disaster year, culminating with LeBron leaving and Shaq retiring.
Lakers need to resign Ariza and Odom if they want to get past the new/old Spurs. Prediction: Duncan gets re-energized with R-Jeff coming in and has a borderline MVP season. Spurs pick up DeJuan Blair in the draft, he'll be a player there. Nice pick.

The list is a mile long. The day before the draft and the rumor mill is churning. There is just too much going on. Most of it is probably bullshit.

Anyway, my final thoughts on the Grizz pick: If we don't trade the pick and we select Thabeet, it will be considered a failed draft and might get Wallace fired (wait, that might be a really good thing!). No one is getting behind that selection, at least not at #2. No way we take Rubio unless we plan to trade him. No way they take Tyreke at #2, I just don't believe he is the 2, maybe 4 or 5. As I've been hoping for, my wish is that we trade down to 4 or 5 after a deal that lands us a big (Thompson/Love) and we take Evans or Curry to play alongside Mayo and Gay. Or trade the 2 for a guard and get Thabeet at 4 or 5 (though that seems unlikely).

PS-Rondo for Gay and Conley better not happen. And I love Rondo's game.

I'm almost reluctant to write this, but I'm actually pretty optimistic that the Grizz might not mess this situation up. Lately the front office has made some progress (OJ Mayo) and gotten some luck (the #2 pick). So maybe we'll pull the trigger on a franchise changing trade or make a bold draft selection (Rubio). Either way, I'm excited for tomorrow night!

Thoughts on NBA Draft:

I'm cooling on Ricky Rubio...which seems to be like everyone else. Little bitch doesn't want to play here? Fine, have fun in Sacto or OKC.
I'm warming to Stephan Curry. If he can handle the point, him and OJ in the backcourt could be dynamic. But, he is not a #2 pick
I'm also warming to Hasheem Thabeet, but not at #2

That's all I've got. I still say trade the pick down to 4 or 5, then if we pick Thabeet or Curry there, it wouldn't be as big a blunder as taking them at 2. And you'll get something (a big if we want Curry or a guard if we go after Thabeet) in return for the #2 pick. Sounds simple, but this is the Grizzlies we're talking about.

Other Thoughts:

And what's the deal with Hakim Warrick? Isn't his contract up?
Maybe the Grizz overpay for Trevor Ariza or Lamar Odom?

The Lakers completed their domination of the Orlando Magic last night to win the NBA Championship.

Kobe's first post-Shaq title
Phil Jackson's 10th freakin title as a coach
Kobe and Derek Fisher are tied with Tim Duncan for most titles among active players with 4
Pau Gasol gets a ring
Adam Morrison gets a ring

And Kobe is only 31 years old. He's got a chance with this group to easily get 2 more rings, and possibly 3 or 4. Yes, he is that good and you know that Lakers will keep reloading. And people are questioning whether or not P-Jax re-ups on his deal. Really!? Umm, let me think...coach Kobe and the Lakers, have a chance to get multiple rings in the next 5 years, make minimum $8 mil a year and live in LA, date the bosses daughter. Hmm, I think I'll stay.

So say the Cavs get Shaq. Shaq and LeBron in the Finals next year against the Lakers??? Think David Stern wants that? I bet he would rather see that than LA vs Boston. Anyway, the Grizz are going to get Blake Griffin and Amare Stoudemire and put them with OJ and Rudy and win next year.

Summer League Update:

Team #6 pulls the exciting upset vs Team #2 last night. John (white guy) and Jonathan (black guy) combine to score 62 of our 76 points and lead us to victory. Solid win...actually...our only win.

Summer League:

Garbage Time picked up our first win in what seems like forever. Garbage player Chris Vernon hit some early three pointers along with some other guys and we took a big early lead and coasted to victory.

Team #6 took a rough loss last night. We held tough for the first half, but the other team had too many shooters and ran the floor way better than us. Side note: First ejection of the year happened from a guy on our team-no clue his name, but the first thing he said to me when I saw him was, "Man, I'm all liquored up on bourbon and wine, guess I'll get out here and see what the hell I can do!" Funny thing is he was defending me against some very questionable foul calls. He was on the bench when ejected after some, hmm, we'll call it "colorful language" towards the ref. Without a doubt the highlight of the night.

Other Shizzz:

Tim Floyd resigns after OJ scandal. Eh, whatever, he'll be on the bench somewhere else real soon. Remember Kelvin Sampson? He's a coach for the Bucks in the NBA.

While we have heard nothing new on the Grizz pick, we did learn that Boston, New York and Houston have called the Grizz about the #2 pick. And I'm sure Chris Wallace will be getting a lot more calls as well. I wouldn't mind David Lee from NY, although he said last year he didn't want to play here. Maybe Scola from Houston? I don't know, too many unknowns right now.

I do think we should trade the pick. It does not look like Rubio wants to play here. So we trade the pick for a young big and the other teams pick. Jason Thompson and the 4 from Sacto - that's the deal I want.

Finals:

So that's what happens when you have your last shot taken by Courtney Lee...he misses and you're down 0-2. He had a look, but came up short. Now the Lakers control the series. Magic maybe get a game at home, but this is looking like sweep. Kobe is dialed in, Pau and Lamar Odom are playing well and the Lake Show is controlling Dwight Howard.

Tiger Notes:

Shawn Taggert is officially done with Memphis. It will be interesting to see what happens with his career. D-League? Overseas? Who knows, but doubtful for the NBA.

Pastner got a huge commitment from Will Barton the other day for the 2010 class. I guess we had to give a scholarship to his brother, Antonio, for him to come in the package deal. Good news for the future of Tiger hoops, which could use all the good news we can get.

My "sources" say that Pastner is recruiting heavily in the city of Memphis, and should sign the kid from White Station, Joe Jackson...assuming he passes his SAT. HA!

Summer League Update:

Game 2 for Team #6 ended in another loss, however we almost doubled our point production from Game 1. I had another very average performance fighting foul trouble most of the game...or so I thought. I assumed that this league was like every single church basketball game I have ever played in, you get 5 fouls. Well, apparently in this league you get 6 fouls and you never foul out. You can keep playing with 6 fouls, but if you get another foul it counts as a technical foul as well as the original foul. So late in the game, I'm trying really hard not to pick up my 5th (thinking I'll foul out), so I play shadow defense and don't play very aggressively. Eventually I pick up my 5th with 2 minutes left in a tight game. I go to the bench assuming I fouled out only to learn after the game that I didn't. Shouldn't my coach know that rule? I blame him! Ha, not a big deal though, he's a cool guy. Shout out to Byron Freeman.

C-League starts tonight at 7 pm. I've told myself that I'm not going to complain or try to voice my opinion on anything with this team. Just play and have fun.

First things first: Congrats to Randy Johnson for career win 300 last night. Also, props to the guy for having the unusual nickname of "The Big Unit." Probably the most underrated nickname ever.

Well, after one game of the NBA Finals it looks like Kobe Bryant will not let the Lakers lose. 40 points 8 boards and 8 dimes to stomp out the Magic 100-75. There's really nothing more to say.

Update on Summer Hoops:

While we lost our first game of the year, Team #6 came out strong and played together. However it wasn't enough as we fell 45-35 to Team #5. Horace and I both played well, but the combination of playing with new players, having not played in months and our overall lack of skills had us doomed. Game 2 is Sunday night.

P.S - I shot a dismal 2-6 from the line...awful. But I did have 2 monstrous blocks.

Finally caught the movie Tyson, which is an excellent documentary on the former "Baddest Man on the Planet." I have no idea when/if it will be released in Memphis (I got a downloaded version), but if you have a chance to catch it, I would highly recommend it. Even if you're not fan of boxing. It's about the man and why he abused women and wanted fellow boxers to "feel my fist in the back of their skull." Most Tyson fans probably already know the back story of growing up in New York, beating people up and turning his life around with boxing, hitting rock bottom and the roller coaster life he has had, but to hear it in his words is different. Makes you feel for the guy and wonder if you had come from what he came from, would you have turned out any better? I don't want to give too much away, just watch it. 3.76 stars out of 4.

Summer League Basketball starts tonight! Horace's Houses own, Pants Reid, has joined me in forming Team #6 in the Legends League. Tonight we play the equally well named Team #5.

In the C-League, "The Reptile" and I are also on the same team but we will be joined by Garbage Time teammates Jon Roserbud and Chris "Never Met a Shot He Didn't Like" Vernon aka Quick Trigger. As well as "Hot Shot" Harry Long aka "Coach" aka "Complain to the Refs Guy" and Jeff something or other. I don't know his last name. Mark "Broken Bones" McClesky aka "Pitbull" and Will "I Don't Realize I'm Way Taller Than Everyone Else So I'll Play Point Guard" Askew. And maybe some other dudes. Garbage Time resumes on Tuesday.

Good day, students. Apologies for my delayed absence. I've been extremely busy.

Lets get down to business!

NBA Finals:

Lakers vs. Magic? This wasn't suppose to happen. Funny how an ordinary player (Mo Williams) makes an extraordinary guarantee ("We're going to win the series.") and then fails to show up. So the city of Cleveland can thank Mo when LeBron goes to New York. Oh, and don't fault King James, he averaged a (Stu Scott voice) ridonkulous 38 points 8 boards and 8 dimes. Booyah!

So now we get Kobe and Dwight Howard. Howard had his way (when not in foul trouble) against Big Z, Side Show Bob, Broken Knees Ben Wallace and Joe Smith. The Lakers are much more atheletic and younger. Andrew Bynum and Pau will have their hands full, but they can make Howard work on defense and possibly keep him in foul trouble, thus reducing his minutes and impact on the game.

The Jameer Nelson coming back stories are irrelevant. I don't want a guy who missed half the season coming back in the Finals.

Other story lines that do matter: Kobe trying for that first ring (again) post-Shaq. Phil Jackson going for record 10th coaching title and trying to stop losing streak in Finals at 2.

Ultimately I like the Lakers to win in 6 games. Kobe's leadership and P-Jax's experience over the Master of Panic should be enough. X-factor in the series is the Magic's 3-point shooting. They stay hot and they have a chance, just ask the Cavs.

The U of M is suppose to release a 500 page response report to the allegations of cheating in the D-Rose era. That should be an interesting read...

That would suck if we had to vacate the 07-08 season and the 38 wins, but it's not as if we didn't have it coming (if it's true). Ahh what am I saying, of course it's true.

Gary Parrish is reporting that Memphian and current Duke player Elliot Williams is considering a return home to the University of Memphis and would not have to sit out a year. Umm, yes please. Add E-Will and the other guys? Top 15 team.

What the hell is going on with Lance Stephenson? My guess (which is completely pointless and without any fact or knowledge) is that he will sign somewhere obscure and disappear. He'll sign with FIU and have one tumultuous year under Isaiah Thomas, try to turn pro and suck. Career D- Leaguer. That being said, I really hope he signs with Memphis, ha.

Possible scenario that I like: Clippers are in love with Rubio. Rubio wants to be in a big market. Clips trade Baron Davis and the #1 for Gay/Jaric whoever and the #2. Lineup with Davis, Mayo in the backcourt and Griffin down low sounds intriguing. That wouldn't be a bad situation...unless Baron Davis hates Memphis too.

Well well, look at the Griz getting lucky in the draft lottery. While we don't get Blake Griffin (who I am still not 100% sold on), we do get to choose between Ricky Rubio or Hasheem Thabeet. Or we could trade the pick.

Reports today are saying Rubio wants no part of Memphis. I don't know if I completely believe that "source." Why wouldn't he want to come here? Oh right, we suck. But there's got to be something said for our franchise having all these other Spanish team guys. Maybe Juan Carlos called him and said, "Hola, Senor Rubio? No me gusta Memphis." Who knows, but until I hear it from Rubio himself, he is the #2 pick.

If it turns out that he doesn't want to play here, then we obviously have to draft him just to piss him off. We can not be bullied! Fuck you, Steve Francis! Fuck you, David Lee! Fuck you, Trail Blazers! Mike Heisley might be a lot of bad things, but at least lately he has shown he will not be pushed around. We keep the pick. We put OJ and Rubio in the backcourt. We make a trade for a big and we win 30 games next year.

However, we are dealing with the ineptness that is...the Grizzlies Organization. So we get this great pick, we have a million options to make the team better, but deep down it just feels like we'll goof it. Is there any reason to suggest otherwise?

Hide the dog! Mike Vick is home. He should be allowed to return to the NFL. The guy did 20 months for killing dogs. Leonard Little killed people and walked. Pacman is responsible for a guy being paralyzed (among countless other things). Tank Johnson had an arsenal of automatic weapons and did like 4 months. Before I delve into the sports world I must first mention a dramatic change to an already credible candy. I'm talking about the new Runts. For years the original mix was banana, strawberry, lime, orange and cherry. Then they added watermelon and blue raspberry while dropping the lime. Bad move to say the least. Then they change it with mango and pineapple. WTF!? That is when I wrote off Runts. I would still occasionally munch some, but it wasn't the same. I feel like Willy Wonka let me down. I would peruse the candy isle at the Dollar Store several times a week and always pass by the Runts with pineapple and mango. But now? Wonka has redeemed himself by adding grape and green apple to the orange, banana and strawberry. Now when I'm at the Dollar Store, the new Runts have become a regular in my candy cycle. Just thought I'd share.

On to Sports!

The draft lottery is tonight and, as usual, the Memphis Grizzlies will have a representative there (I think Hollins). So tonight, all of the Grizz fans will get their hope up for the top pick and a chance to get Blake Griffin. Yeeeeah, not going to happen. I predict, at best, we draft 4th. But my heart and my gut say we'll be picking 8th. I think we should explore some trades. I mean, we have 3 first round picks. All of the guys after Griffin, Thabeet and Rubio are all athletic backcourt guys, which we have in Gay Mayo. No one really appeals to me, but then again, I don't know a ton about some of the guys like James Hardin. Anyway...just prepare yourself for disappointment fans.
John Wall finally made his commitment to Kentucky. Umm, they're going to be really good.
Jerry West said, well basically said, that LeBron is better than Kobe. No argument hear.

Other Shit Poppin'

I don't have television right now, so I've been catching up on some movies. Caught The Wrestler and it is every bit as good as advertised. Mickey Rourke did a great job. I give it 3.47 stars out of 4.
Also caught Notorious, the Biggie Smalls biopic. Not a classic or anything, but if you like Biggie or even just a fan of hip hop, it's worth a watch. And the chick that plays Lil Kim gets naked a lot...for those of you that are into that. I'll give it 3.01 stars out of 4.
Manny K tried to make me watch Frost/Nixon after a night of heavy drinking and I feel asleep two minutes in.
Eminem's newest cd, Relapse, drops today as well as Blackout 2 from Redman and Method Man.

Kareem Cooper (remember him?) has declared for the NBA Draft. Hmm, interesting decision. Let us recap: Came to Memphis, was fat, slow, horrible backup for Joey Dorsey. Never got in shape, busted for pot, suspended, came back, still sucked. Went to UTEP...who the hell knows what happened there? Now, he wants to play pro ball? Obviously, he still smokes that good.
While I will at some point watch it, Kobe Doin' Work - A Spike Lee Joint, doesn't really feel like it's going to live up to all this hype. I mean, he knows the cameras are there! He's not going to be the Kobe everybody knows he is. He's going to be the Kobe that he wants us to believe he is. And while I'm at it -

Dear Spike,

Must you continue to put "A Spike Lee Joint" after every title you direct? What is the point of this? You're black. We know this. You're "hip" or whatever. You make movies, we know this. Let the movie speak for itself. But I know why you do it. You're selfish and you want your name on everything. Do you think people will think less of your (mostly) good movies? I mean, every high caliber director will attach his name to a trailer for the movie or a print ad, but not every single promo for the film. Get over yourself. You're already a well accomplished, well respected director. That is all.

The Rockets have forced a Game 7 against LA. So, last time they played in LA, Houston lost by 40 in a pivotal Game 5. I say they hang around for about 7-9 minutes in this game before scrub squad Lakers, led by Jordan Farmar, hold off the Rocket rally. Lakers by 27.
The Magic also forced a Game 7. Back to Boston. Home team holds the advantage. Ray Ray gets more than 5 points, Garnett dresses, but doesn't play. Pierce gets 35, Big Baby has 4. Celtics by 17.

Say It Ain't So, Manny!

How did this happen?! Come on, Manny. According to his agent, Scott Boras, he did not test positive for steroids, but a prescribed drug from a doctor for a medical condition. I think we've all heard that before. Anyway, he's out 50 games and loses a third of that $20 mil contract for this year.

I can't wrap my head around this. Manny is one of my favorite players and I always thought there was no way he was using PED's. I mean, he's not fast. He's always been pretty big. He never hit crazy home run totals (like 72). Just didn't think it was going to happen to him. And now my level of interest in baseball has crumpled from 3 to 1 on a scale of 1-10. Who's next? Pujols? Griffey?

I take back all that I said or thought about the Red Sox when they were having trouble with Manny. I feel bad for the Dodger fans. Manny being Manny.

Really, Brett Favre? Really?

This guy again? Brett Favre will meet with the Minnesota Vikings about a possible return to the NFL.

So now, more Favre crap all off-season dominating the NFL headlines. Great.

My thoughts: Favre's ego still thinks it can play. Favre's arm can't play anymore. He had a torn bicep during the last 5 games with the Jets last season causing him to play terribly and causing the Jets to miss the playoffs. He wanted to go to the Vikings anyway before signing with the Jets.

My conclusion: Favre's ego thinks his magic arm will heal and be 100% and he can lead the Viking to the Super Bowl with Adrian Peterson. Also, playing the Packers two times a year and playing in a dome probably has some influence on his decision.

What I hope happens: After working all off-season to get in shape and hoping his bicep heals, it doesn't. Favre finally comes to realization that he can no longer play football and becomes a mentor/QB coach in the NFL. That way, he is out of the spotlight, but still in the game in some capacity.

Going to Jets and stinking it up late in the season will be forgotten in years to come. If he goes to the Vikings and stinks it up there, that will not soon be forgotten. He gets a pass on the Jets season, but he does not get two. However, he is Brett Favre...what if he's still got it?

NBA:

LeBron James wins the MVP. His first of what should be multiple in his career. I feel truly honored that God would put me on this Earth and allow me to watch James play basketball. Understatement-The Cavs are really good. Just doing a little thinking about LeBron and Kobe. Trade them for each other. LeBron, Pau, Bynum and Odom. Kobe, Delonte West, Mo Williams, Big Z. I think the LeBron Lakers would crush the Kobe Cavs.
Denver looks unstoppable. Sorry Dirk, the Mavs aren't getting anything in that series. I'll be honest, I wouldn't mind seeing a Rockets/Nugs Western Finals.
The East doesn't matter. The Cavs will be in the Finals.

Otherness:

Manny Pacquiao destroyed Ricky Hatton on Saturday possibly sending Hatton to an early retirement. Floyd Money Mayweather also said he is coming back. He's got a fight this summer in what is expected to be a tune up for what will be billed as the Greatest Fight Ever- Pacquiao vs. Mayweather.
A key Memphis recruit is expected to pick Kentucky today at his press conference. Eric Bledsoe looks to join - who else? - Coach Cal in Lexington. This would have been huge for Josh Pastner, who because of Cal, can't catch a break in the recruiting.
